I don’t know about you, but it seems like I’m always preparing food, and cooking isn’t really my first love (or even my second or third!). So simplify! Here’s some of the things I’ve found to be effective:
- Do simple lunches – it was good enough for us when we were kids! When I was a kid I had sandwiches of some variety every day. Don’t spend hours doing all that gourmet stuff – there’s nothing wrong with a good old cheese & Vegemite sandwich or toasted muffin and then off to bed for a lunchtime nap.
- Prepare Slow Cooker dinners – I often find it easier to prepare dinner in the morning when the kids are fresh. My daughter “helps” by getting things out of the fridge and putting them back, I chop up whatever needs chopping, have it on by 11am and then we have a nice hot dinner ready at 6. Not only that, but there’s only 1 pot to wash! Check out the Slow Cooker section in our Recipes Database for some ideas.
- Get small babies eating the same food as you as soon as possible. When I think of the hours I spent when my daughter was born, cooking up special pots of mixed vegies and then pureeing, freezing… my 10 month old son eats 3 meals a day, when we eat, and apart from the usual “no-no’s” like egg and peanut butter, he has what we have just mashed up a bit with a fork.
- Spend a couple of hours on a weekend preparing meals you can freeze – then it’s a case of defrost & serve. Or when you do cook a dinner that's freezable, make a double-batch and freeze half. Not very Martha Stewart, but SO much easier. We also have a Time Saving Tips section in the Recipes Database.
